Blend Advanced Diploma Working with Head and Neck Cancer
A blended learning course recognised and accepted by all major awarding bodies and insurers our course will give you the skills and confidence to work with oncology clients with a history of or active cancer with specific knowledge and skills for the head and neck.

This unique course has been developed by Tracey Kiernan director of Blend therapy and Training. Traceys extensive experience of working in this area gives an in depth understanding of the special challenges of working with the client with head and neck cancer.

A fully qualified dental nurse with 20 years experience, 20 years experience as a highly qualified massage and fascial therapist and a qualified ScarWorker Tracey is responsible for the creation of TMJ Therapy® and the Blend Fascial Facial®.

Head and neck cancers include cancers of the mouth and the throat, as well as some rarer cancers. These include cancer of the sinuses (air spaces in the bones of the face), the salivary glands, or the nose or middle ear.

Mouth cancer can develop on the lip, tongue, or anywhere inside the mouth. Throat cancer can mean different parts of the neck the pharynx and the larynx (voicebox) cancers of the thyroid, oesophagus (gullet) or wind pipe (trachea).

Her specialist knowledge combines to give a deep understanding of the challenges of working with this area of the body and the medically fragile client.

Course Structure

Completion of the Blend Online Oncology Specific Training or similar is pre requisite for this course. You may do our online training alongside this training.
Two practical days with Tracey at Blend to include working with real clients in a clinical situation

Should you need it, our online interactive and mentored course costs just £350 including ongoing support through our dedicated study group. This comprehensive course will qualify you to work with clients with a history of, or who have active cancer, and even whilst undergoing treatment.

The practical days which includes working with real oncology clients costs just £300 if booked and paid before 31st October 2019 and £335 after.

Approved and recognised by both FHT, Balens and Holistic Insurance Services and all major insurers our online qualification will provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills to treat oncology patients safely and appropriately.
Course content:

Head and neck anatomy and physiology.
Signs symptoms and treatments offered by the medical profession
Special concerns and complications or working with head and neck cancer.
Dealing with post surgery trauma
Working with scar tissue to improve aesthetics and functionality
The impact of head and neck cancer on the rest of the body
The emotional impact of scarring and other complications from surgery and radiotherapy to the head and neck.
Using an oncology specific intake form (provided)
Red flags and precautions regarding touch when working with �sufferers throughout the stages of their illness and recovery
Your role as a soft tissue therapist and when to refer
Cross infection control and how this varies from the average client
How to adjust your approach to include reference to level of demand, and avoidance of certain sites
How to position your client to ensure comfort following surgery.
Working with implants, ports, stoma bags and central lines.
How to adapt your touch when treating delicate clients.
Working �with client feedback
Effects of treatment including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Working with scars and adhesions following surgery after cancer and radiotherapy
Specific head and neck cancer care including working with post operative �scarring, self massage techniques and recommended �exercises for the client
Conditions & side effects associated with cancer and treatment:
Client comfort, aftercare, and homecare
Contraindications and cautions.

Those who are already qualified to work with oncology clients may go straight onto the practical days.

This qualification is a culmination of many years of dedicated work in this field and we are immensely proud of the protocol and passionate about delivering excellent quality training in this subject.
